Why won't my password show up on the lock screen?

[Android Central Question]

I just got my new Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 and when I go to my settings and set a password, the password doesn't show up on the lock screen, it just says "swipe to unloco" and then I can swipe and it opens. So I went to bed and woke up this morning, I got it off the charger and turned it on, it let me draw the pattern, I had thought it worked so then I turned it off again but then it said swipe to unlock. Till now I still can't get the pass code to show up, please help
