Why won't my phone keypad type symbols in my password?

Phone keypad won't type symbols in my password.

I have a HTC One S. Some time ago I set up a password that had to be entered when changing/adding phone programs (downloads, settings etc - I have no idea how I did it!!) It included a symbol. This worked fine for a while however when entering the password now the keyboard will not 'type' the symbol. I have tried it a couple of ways, the dots appear (instead of exposing the password) but then on the symbol the cursor jumps back, deleting the symbol.

I have tried experimenting using different symbols, cutting and pasting the password in and it still will not accept it. I cannot update apps, use other WiFi providers, change the settings in any way etc.

Does anyone know why it is doing this and how I can change it. Also, if you know how I can remove the need for this password please let me know as I wish I had never done it!!

Welcome to Android Central! What do you mean by changing or adding phone programs? Are you talking about a password in Google Play Store to allow an app to be purchased and installed? Or do you have a 3rd party app locker app that requires a password to access or modify apps?

When you say that you're using your phone keypad to try to type symbols, is it a QWERTY keyboard that's appearing, or a numeric phone dialer pad?

I know this is an old post, but I'm having the same issue. My son is in icu on a breathing tube, and we are trying to get into his phone, to handle some bills, etc, for him. His password has a * at the end, but he only has a phone keypad, with letters and numbers only. How can I enter the *?? Please and thank you!

Try different keyboard see if same happens? Gboard or Swiftkey
Some sites only allow just numbers

Are you certain that password is for the phone, and not for his Google account or some other account? The phone password isn't necessarily the same as the Google account password.
