Why won't my screen work in portrait upside down for GPS?

So, I have my phone plugged into the charger and have it sitting in portrait mode with the cable facing up.

The screen won't stay on if using the GPS for some reason. Anyone else have luck using it this way?

What do you mean 'using the GPS'? If I am navigating by Google Maps, it works upside down with the cable facing up. Otherwise, it doesn't. What app are you using?
