Wi-Fi Connects But Doesn't Actually Work

[AC Question]

The wi-fi on my HTC one connects and has a strong signal but I cannot actually connect to anything. The mobile data works fine. When I use chrome it gives the error "Unable to connect to proxy server." When I go into settings it says it is connected to wi-fi but it doesn't work- I can't use chrome or apps requiring wi-fi. I don't know much about this so any help would be appreciated. I've been trying to fix this for days. Thanks

Sometimes when you connect to a router you do not connect to the internet. On my nexus 7 tab this situation is shown as a brown WiFi symbol.
