WI-FI using way too much battery

My WiFi has used over 30% of my battery today, and it has been turned off all day. Any idea how to turn off WiFi completely so it doesn't use battery? (My carrier is Sprint)

If WiFi is off but "Scanning always available" is checked (in WiFi, Advanced) then WiFi can still come on in the background.
