Wi-fi vs 4G vs signal strength

I don't charge my Thunderbolt overnight, it's just not convenient. I charge in the mornings and evenings. So my phone is 100% charged when I go to bed.

Over the last 2 weeks, it has had nominal discharge overnight, usually about 42mA. But last night, it was regularly hitting 300-400mA and my battery was 85% drained in 7 hours with 0 usage.

I haven't installed any new apps or changed any settings that would affect this. So I assume it has something to do with my 4G signal strength.

I've read that at home you should turn off 4G and turn on wi-fi for best battery life, but I have found that using 4G over wi-fi works best for me. (My wi-fi signal strength into my room is not that strong.)

So my questions: how does signal strength affect battery life for wi-fi and for 4G? When signal strength is poor, does the phone constantly look for a signal or try to get a stronger signal? Is that what could be causing last night's irregular battery drain? With poor signal strength, is less battery used when in wi-fi or 4G?

I just turn ON my Wifi... that might solve your problem... it's great for my device at work and at home. It might actually be an application that burned through your battery over night. Another thing you might consider using is a scheduling app that will put your phone into Airplane mode overnight, unless you need your phone on over night. If you don't you might want to check into an app like Timeriffic... you can schedule Airplane mode and a number of other things at specific times and then back on shortly before you wake up or shortly after you wake up... either work for me.
