wifi address requirement

In setting up wifi calling there is a requirement to enter and address for a 911 call. Very frustrating in that we live 10 miles from the closest town and are rarely home particularly during the winter. Why isn't this optional. I really want to see our town volunteers spending hours and a wild goose chase....seems rather stupid to me?

Welcome to Android Central! I think it's because wi-fi doesn't always share the exact or correct location (especially if you're using a VPN). Most phones should be able to send GPS location separate from the wi-fi network, but having the address manually entered is kind of a safety valve if that's not available.

Wow, I completely understand why its there. What I do not understand is why the issue is forced potentially sending first responders on a wild goose chase for hours!

Like I mentioned above, I think it's a safety valve in case all other ways of identifying the location are not available. Whoever came up with the regulation presumably figured that even if people are roaming around using wi-fi calling, overall the highest probability of usage would be at home.

This is also why it's important to make sure Emergency Location Service is turned on for your phone (if available): https://www.android.com/safety/emergency-help/emergency-location-service/
