So I've updated to the official 2.2 on my original droid. I know that motorola and verizon say the droid is not capable of having a personal wifi hotspot but i know that its been done. I don't want to have a custom rom, I just want to either tether or preferably have a personal hotspot coming from my droid. How do I do this with froyo?

You can't get wireless tethering without rooting on Froyo (still not a true wireless hotspot though). The only other option is usb tethering with something like pdanet or pay the $20/month to Verizon for the built-in usb tethering in Froyo.

yeah i'm trying to avoid the verizon fees obviously.

rooting is not the same as a custom rom though, is it?

yeah, they're different. You still have the same rom when you root but you just have full access. I believe Barnacle Wifi Tether only requires root access so that's probably the easiest one.

I use pdanet with great success with speeds like the old DSL connections. My last speedtest.net ran it at 600kbps. A very nice and painless utility.
