WiFi Hotspot Question (T-Mobile)

I rarely use the WiFi hotspot feature and on my previous phone (LG G4), I would access it via the icon T-Mobile provided. The counter would start ticking and let me know how much data I was using on my plan. With the MPXE, I connect with the icon in settings and it works fine. Doing it this way, is T-Mobile still tracking my usage or is this allowing me unlimited WiFi tethering? Again, I rarely use it and I don't plan on using any more data than I had previously...I'm just curious.

T-Mobile will track it. I use it on my Nexus 6P on T-Mobile, and the phone doesn't have any T-Mobile software on it. They still know how much I'm tethering.
