Here's the manual for the RE200: https://static.tp-link.com/2019/201910/20191024/1910012621_RE200RE220_UG_REV3.1.0.pdf. When you set up, it'll want to know both 2.4 and 5 GHz network SSIDs and password (if available). So yes, it extends the wi-fi by connecting to the existing network, and then amplifying that network.
