WiFi Versus 3G

On my college campus, we have WiFi. I want to use this instead of 3G on my Captivate. However, the only way I can see to do WiFi only is going Airplane mode, then turning on the WiFi. But I can't get text messages like this. Any suggestions?

As long as your Wi-Fi is on, then you will use Wifi instead of 3g, even though your 3g is still running.

Text and voice are not transmitted via 3G or WiFi (acc to AT&T in-store staff), so just turn on WiFi when you have it (that action turns off 3G - AT&T guy said this too), and turn 3G on if/when you need it.

I keep wifi running all the time, battery management seems good enough to handle it. I only turn off wifi if I know I'm going to be out of my usual spots.
