my home wifi worked great for along time, now just recently i cannot connect to my wifi unless i reset my router, and then it only connects until I am out of range and then it cannot connect again. my phone can detect it up it just seems to loop from obtaining IP address to saved on secrure network, then it imediately goes back to obtaining IP address. does this endlessly. Short of getting a new router I am out of ideas. any help would be much appreciated.

in case it matter, yes I am rooted but i had this problem before I rooted my phone too.

I had this problem myself and I had to replace my router (then I had to replace my modem a few months after).

I'd say try to find a good router and see if that works. If not, you got a new router out of the deal at least and can try something else.

Yep, more likely your router is going bad. i've had this issue with previous routers.
Try to see if you can upgrade the router bios. if you can, and behaves the same after the bios update, it'd would be perfect excuse to get yourself a new router.

Take care.

It is the phone. There is an app in the market called Wifi fixer, it should do the trick in helping you maintain the signal. Once it refreshes those settings you can uninstall the app

This isn't the phone. If it's happened before rooting AND after, it's a bad router. No app is gong to fix this.

It happened on my Buffalo router.. I reflashed the router's firmware and now I never have the problem.

Before replacing your router (which costs money) look into putting dd-wrt on it instead. My router (linksys) was giving me tons of issues and needed restarting every 2-3 weeks. After putting dd-wrt on it, it's been running perfectly without a restart for 11 months straight (and would be longer but I updated dd-wrt to a newer version at that time).

I actually forgot about DD-WRT. I'd try this first, actually.

damn...I've been having thus problem off and in for the last year or so, with my laptop too and my crappy net gear router isn't supported...guess that's an excuse to get a new one.....

I will try the DD-WRT this weekend. the odd thing is my phone is the only thing that is affected. my wife's iphone and ipad are not, and her laptop is not, even my kids wii and ps3 are not affected.

thanks for the helpful hints everyone

Not the most sound deductive reasoning. I have the same issue on my Nexus S 4G and not on my laptop, kindle fire, x box, I pad, etc etc. And no, it's not the router. It's the phone. Every device I own works with zero issues. Safe to assume it's the phone as all variables are accounted for

It IS the Nexus S 4G phone.

I have two of these phones, tried a third, the wifi is terrible on this Nexus S 4G.

All my other phones, laptops, wireless devices works great.

Using the TomatoUSB firmware on the WRT54G router, I can see the signal drop from the phone.

The wifi on the Nexus 4G phone is terrible, Sprint knows it.

I've had to replace routers before for both customers and for myself. The symptoms the OP is having are classic "my router is screwing up" symptoms, which could mean either failing hardware OR crappy software (in which case, DD-WRT can be flashed onto the router).

Just because your router isn't having problems doesn't mean that the OP's is not. It's not "safe to assume" anything, really.

I've used that router before and it has weird issues like this. It would repeatedly crap out on Windows XP, Vista, 7, and Linux. It did this until I replaced it.

I'd like to know your proof claiming that the wifi is bad for every NS4G in existence because I've had two NS4Gs and neither have had wifi issues on my routers, work, coffee shops, libraries, etc. Trust me, I've tested them. Sounds like you got a bad phone just like I had one with a bad screen.

OP, don't listen to anyone claiming it's the phone until you have tested the router itself by changing the firmware and just getting a new one. Getting a new phone will just net you a refurb that could actually have wifi problems or worse.

if you do have to buy a new one, there are some good ones for $75 on NewEgg and a few on Amazon.com as well.

Curious way to come to this. I'm interested in seeing how this turns out. One thing I recall is being told by the tech who swapped my evo for the NS4G was "expect wifi issues. The signal is weaker than most." I'm not going to argue it because it's a waste time and without trouble shooting it it's just speculation. I'll wager It's the phone. Any takers? Lol

I will admit the wifi is not the greatest on the NS4G. Compared to my Epic 4g its no where as good. I do still get a good connection in my house but not as strong as it would of been with my Epic 4g.

Best thing to try is different channels on your wifi router and see if one may perform a little better than the other.
