Hi, is there any deaf users on here? Although, I went deaf at 17, android seems like a great phone for the deaf. Id like so more experienced knowledge on if my thoughts would allow the epic to function as id like.

Being deaf, I do not use the phone as a phone. I dont make voice calls nor accept them. However, there are TIMES where I DO use sprint captel to make a call. Its a free online service where you provide your number and the number you wish to call. The captioner, online, will call your phone, you answer and it then calls the other person. They then pick up and you get captions displayed on your computer screen. (I havnt looked into, nor tried, any apps that do this or even the internet itself on my epic but thats later lol)

ok, knowing this, I do not want to delete the phone all together. However, I get so many stupid callers. I think the call filter app does a pretty good job at blocking calls but instead of downloading more apps, would something like this work....
I have titanium backup(im rooted) if I froze the phone/voicemail/dialer, would that prevent the phone part of the device stop working? Thus, not allowing anyone to call my number? But, would I still receive text messages and get any other data messaging as normal?

Basically I just want to see if freezing the phone.apk would turn off the phone only, so no one can call me. And when and if I need to make a captioned call, I can thaw it so ill receive the call the captioner send me. Is this possible? Seems to me like the easiest way. Correct me if im wrong please. :)

thanks in advance for any imput. Sorry for the posts length. :P

Not sure about freezing the phone.apk, but have you ever looked into getting a Sprint Relay (Data Only) plan? It's a heavily discounted plan that blocks incoming calls:
Incoming calls will be blocked and may be removed by contacting our video customer service (VCS@sprintrelaystore.com).
The block is not removable on Google Android OS and Palm OS devices.
If the incoming call block is removed, you will be billed at $0.20/min for local voice calls or $0.40/min for long distance voice calls.

If you freeze the Phone.apk or DialerTabActivity.apk (both work hand in hand) your device will probably start putting up FC's (force closings). Even though the apk isn't running all the time I believe the system constantly is checking to make sure its "active/ready". I only say this because when I've been working on stuff doing themes or ROM deving and I've renamed the Phone.apk or DialerTabActivity.apk's to replace them with a temporary test version I will usually start getting FC's within a few seconds of renaming them. I would imagine the same would play out if you were to use Titanium to freeze the apk.

Otherwise, Ragnarokx's recommendation is something worth looking into.

yes but its said you need to order the device directly from sprint relay in order to get that plan. BUT, that is why i didnt get it, i want incoming calls when i NEED it. so i do need to have and be able to allow incoming calls. i just want to be able to set it so i can block every call until i need to make a call. i will then have it set to allow incoming calls so the sprint captel service can reach my phone. i hope this makes sense? any suggestions since freezing phone.apk would set off to man FCs? thanks for the tips and advice!

Have you checked the Google Voice integration?
From the google.com/voice site, you can effectively send all callers directly to voice mail. I use it to filter out other co-workers and numbers from the plant that like to call me, and shut them down on the weekends/days off. You'll still get text messages, and you won't even need to give out another phone number to people.

thanks guys! i tried the google voice but i couldnt figure it out. just didnt understand how to set up block calls. i found a easy filter call blocker that is doing the job so far.

i didnt know about the sprint VRS service. although, i do not sign ,cuh. i lip read well enough you wouldnt think im deaf. i have an implant like a cochlear implant but mine is an auditory brainstem implant. so i can hear noise just not distinguish speech. so, i lip read. :) i just picked up word of a new captel app on android. so im gonna try this too. thanks for the help guys!
