Will I need to unroot my phone to get the ICS update?

So I guess Android 4.0 is coming out for my phone (finally), and I wanted to know whether I'll have to unroot it first. I used the "HTC method" to root it (with this guide).

With this method, I didn't have to get another ROM. I think I'm still on the stock OS that comes with the phone, only now I have the "su" app. Will I have to somehow undo those changes, or can I just update when it comes out?

Edit: I just tried the "HTC software update" in the settings. It downloaded an update, then restarted to install. Instead of installing, all I saw was a little green robot and a warning sign, kind of like this:

Does this mean I have to unroot before I can do a system update? Also, will the ICS update come in the form of an HTC software update, or will it be a firmware update (another option on that list)?

If your rooted then you have a custom recovery. I think the OTA updates use the stock recovery to install. That Might be why you saw that screen. If you want the ics update, wait until they release the ruu and flash it. The custom ics roms are better though.

I need to know the same thing. I'm rooted with s on. Can't use ics roms because either because of bugs. can't I download stock ics update ROM on xda when its released and someone puts it up?

Their are a few very stable custom ics roms available right now, even though they are based on the virgin mobile leak. MeanRom, ZR3DX and others.

The devs will have a sprint ics based rom probably the day after sprint releases it, if not the same day.

I've read about some people with s-on not being able to run ics, maybe because of firmware, I don't know. You should consider downgrading to s-off. With s-off I can run an ruu to get me completely stock and then simply flash a custom recovery and superuser and I'm rioted again. Not quite that easy with s-on.

Downgrading with linux is very easy even for someone that's never seen linux, and from what I hear, the j-bear s-off is even easier.

I've considered gaining s off but with my phone I've learned not to get in over my head. I've considered the j bear trick too but now I feel like sticking a wire into my phone is just crazy. (and I've read the instructions and while it ain't Chinese calculus, "simple" or "easy" are not words that come to mind) Its not that serious with ics around the corner. I offered to pay someone in the Cleveland area to do it, the same guy who rooted my phone, and he didn't feel comfortable doing it. I've given up on s off (unless someone in the Cleveland area is reading this and is 100% sure you ring brick my phone permanently. In which case let me know). the methods to gain S of with this h boot is just too big a hassle. Can't use ANY, I REPEAT; ANY ics ROM based on VM because the wireless tether doesn't work for me and I use it daily. works fine for me on zr3d. So I imagine when the Sprint stock based ics roms come out devs will have a better, more compatible canvas to paint a masterpiece with. so unless I can pay a pro in Cleveland to get me s off, I'm cool. Ics will be here in a couple Weeks or less. Thanks for your help because I have been wondering if I needed to do anything.

lol, you make me laugh, thanks. I've seen some real noobies pull off the jbear/wire trick with no issues, I'm not saying you're a noobie, just saying that I've seen people do it that didn't even know what hboot is. Go to the thread and ask some of the regulars how difficult it is on a scale of 1-10, I bet they will say its a 2. I have done the brick downgrade twice now and the first time I did it was the first time I had ever even seen linux, it was super easy, but the wire trick is even easier. As far as I know, their is only 1 way to fully permabrick an evo 3d and thats by turning s-on while you have an unofficial HBOOT, but now that I think about it you can recover from that too with the unbrick method. I think youd have to erase the whole device from the engineering HBOOT to fully brick your phone.

Works fine for me, try changing the device name to the galaxy s3 and turn on mms clamping in settings.

Ics will be here in a couple Weeks or less.

Are you sure?? ;)

Edit... By the way, if you're ever in the little rock area, hit me up and we'll s-off that thing in just a few minutes.

I'll respond to the last first. No I'm not sure, but I'd bet $20 we'll have it by August 15th. Even Sprint knows you can only jerk customers so much. We've been sufficiently jerked, time for the big pay off, pun intended.

I think I will download a ics ROM and try the galaxy 3 trick but mms clamping is automatically checked I believe. If not I checked it I'm sure. I always check that and "routing fix". Thing is, I noticed none of those ics roms have "routing fix" option in the settings. I firmly believe it's a firmware issue. Used mikvirgin and everything worked but my call mic. I had to use speakerphone to hear people. cleanrom ics and meanrom ics had the wifi tether issue. don't like the look of derp3d ics. I'm telling you I've tried superwipe fix and anthrax kernel fix. we both know all the current ics roms are built from the same foundation and there's only a few "real" differences. They all look like they use a different version of the wifi tether apk than I have on my sd card

Back to the first, if ics is not released I Will try wire trick. But that probably won't happen because it will be here by early August, if they say December or something, I'm selling my evo 3d and my wifes nexus s on craigslist and going to at&t or big red and Sprint can blow me. Again I'm wiling to bet it will be released by September 1st. Sprint knows better
