Will rooted phones get updates?

I'm sure this has probably been answered somewhere, but I'm unable to find it. So, please excuse my noob ignorance. I have come to Android from a line of several iPhones and several years of jailbreaking.

Once an android phone is rooted, will it still receive all of the updates from AT&T and the phone's manufacturer?

If it does receive the updates, will the phone be set back to factory (unrooted) as is done when updating ios?

And I'm assuming, as is with any hardware, that system tampering voids the warranty. So can the process be easily undone in the event that I need some sort of warranty service?

Lastly, will warranty service provider be able to tell that it was at one time rooted?

Hi there, unfortunately rooted phones will not get updates from your carrier. You'll have wait untill your rom maker to update his/her rom. For example my device is running a team whisky rom and I am waiting for them to release a gingerbread based rom.

Sorry my bad. If you only rooted your phone, you will receive updates. And yes your device will revert back to stock and you have to root it again. Sorry about my first answer.

Not so. Your rooted phone will get the update pushed to it, but the installation will fail (It will NOT unroot.). After ATT pushes an update, it usually only takes a few days before someone posts a rooted version of the updated rom. For example, here is where you get the rooted version of the latest ATT rom (e.g., with the April OTA update integrated into it):

PS You can revert back to stock 100% easily, for warranty purposes. I've returned two myself, with zero problems. Just google "Inspire return to stock".

PPS If your are rooted and NOT using a STOCK rooted ROM (e.g., you are using a ROM like CM7 or LeeDroid, or Android Revolution, etc.), you will not get updates pushed to your phone at all, and you can still easily revert to stock unrooted for warranty purposes.

No. You only need to use sd card temporarily as a gold card. after you root, you can use the sd card as before. after you root, you can use any sd card you want, including the one you used for the gold card. root stays even if you switch sd cards to one that is not gold.

To further that, the minimum size SD card you will need is 2gb. You could easily make a gold card out of a brand new 2gb, so you don't lose an SD card of 4 or more gb. I have read posts from several users on XDA that have said they kept their gold card separate from their storage cards. Saves them the trouble of making another one. Just giving you an option, so you still can keep the 8gb card our Inspire's came with and any other big space cards you might have. Good luck and happy rooting!
