Will samsung dex 2017 or 2018 work withour power supply?

I understand to mirror my phone (s9+) I need a usb c to hdmi adapter. But my question is, will the dex pad work as just an adapter if it is not plagued in. I'm on the fence of either buying the dex pad because it has more functionality. But only use its extra features sometimes. I want the ability to just play the phone in and mirror as well without having another power supply just the hdmi to dock then usb to phone. Is this possible with dex? Thanks!

If you only want to mirror your phone, dex isn't necessary, nor are wires.
