Will the new gen. cause lower prices on Nexus 7?

So after looking into tablets for months now I decided I want to buy an original Nexus 7. Even though they only came out last year, a new gen is expected to come out in July! I'm excited as maybe there will be a decent price drop on the original Nexus 7, and then the 32gb will finally be in my price range. :D I'm willing to wait for July to buy one because I need it for college and that's before my next semester starts.

So my questions are, will the new gen of Nexus significantly lower the prices on the original? Any educated guesses on what the prices may go down to? Is it possible the prices will stay the same but the original will be discontinued? :(

You would think they drop the price to clear out the stock of them. Plus early rumors say the next edition of the N7 is supposed to be more affordable so we will have to see what cost cutting measures they take to do this and still provide a quality tablet living up to the Nexus standards/reputation.

I would think they would lower the price of the existing model.

Me personally I'm still deciding whether to upgrade to the new nexus 7 or wait and see what a new is administered might be (only if it has retina, though)

I currently have a mini, but am really getting into android since owning my nexus 4.

My 2 cents if there is a new nexus 7 if will have a higher resolution screen. Apple's retina on the iPad is already lower resolution than the display on the Nexus 10. I suspect the next version may include a rear facing camera in a new model since that would let the unit serve as a test bed for app developers to test/develop apps that augment images as part of the Glasses initiative. I am developing in AR now and would really like a table form factor.

Personally I hope they make a Nexus 8 instead of a 7. I would like to have the screen a little larger. Around 8.5 inches would be great for me, with a higher resolution display. But, since that might increase the price too much. Maybe a separate SKU

Yeah, I don't doubt that the new nexus 7 will have a high res screen. I was just saying I might have trouble picking between a high res nexus 7 and a high res ipad mini. Kinda iffy on androids tablet app ecosystem

I would say definitely, but at my store we can barely keep the N7 in stock. The only reason I got one was because I work O/N so I was able to buy it as they pulled it off the truck. I'm sure the big retailers have warehouse stock to support online sales and those will get clearance or markdown but it is impressive how well the N7 continues to do.

If the Galaxy Nexus to Nexus 4 is any indication, Google will just stop selling the Nexus 7 directly, and leave it up to retailers that still have stock to clear it out.

When would the price be likely to go down though, if it did? When the 2nd gen is announced in May at the I/O conference or when it is released somewhere around July? It makes sense for google and the retailers to shift as many as possible before the new one comes out. But I don't know the habits of companies in regards to how they act when the second version comes out.

I would agree with this - I doubt they would lower the price and have it compete with the brand new N7 right at release. You might see it at some place like woot.com or one sale a day (which is where I got my refurb'd N7).

Because of this, I doubt you see Google themselves lower the price sold directly by them - they'll leave that meat on the bone for other retailers/wholesales.
