Will the Nexus 5 get android updates without activation?

I'm thinking about getting the Nexus 5 mainly for the price and fastest android updates. I know the phone works without activation with a carrier (t-mobile, sprint, etc.) But without a carrier, will I still get the android updates straight from Google?

You get it straight from Google no matter where you buy it. The nexus 5 at the Google play store or t-mobile /sprint you will get them as they are released

The only phone that was the exception was the galaxy nexus on Verizon

The GNex on sprint as well, though those eventually could be found on Google as well.

The updates come fine from Google over WiFi without a carrier.
