Windows 8.1 doesn't see Nexus 6p via USB

Nothing at all, this is the first device I've owned with a Type - C

Ok, I *think* that something is getting grumpy with USB C. So in the mean time, are you trying to transfer to or from the phone and is it photos or music or other stuff? (I don't need details, just trying to come up with an alternative method to get your stuff moved in case we can't solve the USB issue today).

Mainly music and Pics, I'm using the wifi file transfer on Asus File Manager atm, but it's far from as convenient as a simple USB connection.

I'm downloading W10 on my old netbook, I'll see if it recognises it then or even boots

You should see something like this menu after you click on "USB options" in the drop down notification shade when it's correctly plugged in and letting you pick a data mode instead of charging..then it will disconnect from PC and Reconnect as a file device

Another reason I switched to 10...8.0 and 8.1 didn't play well with some things

This is what I was talking about.

Like I said guys and like the video shows, it doesn't show the dialog.

I've installed windows 10, no difference to win 8.1

Mine worked on my Win10 laptop with an A to C cable. I just tested it. This is what I did in sequence:

  1. Plug your phone in to your laptop with an A to C cable.
  2. Unlock the phone.
  3. Swipe down.
  4. There should be a notification there (but no icon) that, when selected, opens the pop-up shown previously.

Note that there is no notification icon so you'll only see it if you swipe down after plugging in. The absence of an icon had me scratching my head at first. This might be a minor bug that's never been squashed.

His video is showing the notification absent. I'm actually really confused by that. My 6P and 5X are both on N and have notifications, but my Nexus 6 on MM also gets the notification immediately whether the screen is on or off when I plug it in.

I knew there was a video but I was at and couldn't watch it...and then forgot about it.

I'm stumped. Mine pops open the notification even with the setting shade open like in the video. Must be the cable?

That's what the nerds and I think too.

A to C cable I'm using ^

I've ordered some new A to C cables, hopefully arrive next few days.

Considering my W10 installation doesn't like it, either the cable or the device itself (my bank account hopes it's the cable)

Mmm,had a sort of similar problem a few weeks ago . I was trying to connect a 64 gb thumb drive to my 6P using a short type c to female usb cable and got absolutely nothing...I then ordered a small solid adapter about half the size of the thumb drive and it worked perfectly first time.Hopefully in your case it may be that the cable, even though its the OEM one,is not compatable/faulty and a new one might do the trick...HTH David.

This isn't ideal, but using this tool kit and going through the driver processes may work it out: Nexus Root Toolkit v2.1.6 | WugFresh There are 3 or 4 ways to install drivers included in there.

I've gone through that a few times before to fix driver things; but I can't figure out why your phone doesn't think you're connected to anything. How long have you had the 6P? If it's still under warranty you may want to contact Google for warranty replacement/RMA.
