The cable, using a wall charger, usually charges faster than wireless. But "wireless" doesn't wear out or break, microUSB connectors do. You also can't trip over "wireless" and rip the charging connector (and a few other parts) out of the phone, while flinging the phone into a wall.

It's not something you must do, or should do, it's something you can do. Some people love it, some hate it, some don't care. I didn't start using it until there was a standard. Now my daily phone has a Qi receiver in it and I have a Qi charging plate. The plate is on the right side of the desk, the computer and power strip are on the left side. Sometimes I want the phone on my right while it's charging. (I still use the wall charger and cable if the battery is a little low and I'll be going out in an hour - it charges almost twice as fast as wireless - 640mA vs. 1,200 mA.)

I wrote a post in this thread, where I added the necessary hardware for ~ $25.
Sorry, I've not enough posts to give you the link.

Worth it ? For me YES. I hate messing around with the usb cable and plugging it in.
Now, I just set the phone on the charging stand, Q1, and let it stay there parked until later.

I tried it on my Sprint G3. It charged painfully slow, always giving a slow charge notification when starting. I haven't tried another charger plate yet, but I don't worry about it much since my kit kat battery life is outstanding.

I'm one of those people who used to love it and now hate it. If it was a matter of just plopping the phone down on the charging mat and eventually getting a full charge, that would be nice. But with my AT&T sponsored Powermat that uses PMA technology and not the more common Qi, one has to slide the phone around to find the sweet spot and feel a magnetic pull to know if the phone is positioned correctly. When the battery is fully charged, everything shuts down. If things are running in the background, one could wake up from an overnight charge with less than 100% on the battery. Bump the table where the charging mat is lying, and the magnetic connection with the phone could be broken.
Plugging a charging cable in is about the same amount of hassle as finding the correct spot on the charging mat. The charging cable is a more reliable connection than the charging mat, IMHO, and the phone is always fully charged in the morning.
