Note 5 battery is not removable. The phone is an amazing performer, but they screwed with the formula for tech people. On top of that, they made a phone that doesn't open up and isn't waterproof. You'd think it would be easy since they have watertight models that open.

sure why not

Well I guess a slip on battery case would leave the USB unsealed so nix that way out.
I can't see the kind of drain you're talking about but then my wife's phone is rooted and pretty optimised.
Why do you post this here and not in the Note5 forum?

Haven't had the time to do a bunch of searching and when I search note 5 wireless charging this is the only thread that really came up. I'm trying to find out if everybody else's doesn't do maintenance charging or if it's just this stupid setup.

I've a Samsung charging cover for my Note 4, use a Caseology case (see Amazon link below), and don't have a problem with wireless charging. Although it's a snug fit, the case does fit around the phone and all the buttons work. Actually, I like the way the case fits now as opposed to the original backing cover as it feels more solid. I also have a Seidio Dilex case (see link below) and while I can get the phone in the case, some of the buttons will not work properly. Another thing I like about the Caseology case is that I can use the Dilex holster with it (fits very well and locks in place as good as the Dilex case itself).

Wireless charging for me is not as good where I would like it to be. I'm not trying to be arrogant or selfish but in my opinion, wireless charging will be much more useful if the effective range was increased to at least 3 feet (1m) This way you could use your phone and have it charging from a distance. There is already research being done and people are planning to have devices where you could charge your phone within anywhere in the room by a small device.
