Wireless charging with Android Auto on USB?

I found some talk from a few years ago but does anyone know if it is possible to wireless fast charge while at the same time connected to Android Auto through USB?

My car's USB port doesn't rapid charge so I thought this might make for a good combination if it worked.

Since the two - charging and Android Auto - have nothing to do with each other, it should definitely be possible.

The real question is... when connected to a USB charging port will wireless charging work?

Wireless charging stops when it is plugged in. If you connect to your car's infotainment system via BT, Android Auto will still work.

USB and wireless charging are not possible simultaneously, USB charging has always the highest priority. This means that if you were charging wirelessly your phone, when connecting the usb cable, the wireless charging stops and the usb charging starts regardless if it is connected to a fast or regular charger. I have the same problem in my car, the usb charging is very slow and, when using waze and internet music, not sufficient even. I already tried different set-ups using usb hubs but nothing worked.

I'm fairly sure the two charging cirquits are separate so that you can charge wireless still unless of course the phone only recognize the plugged in usb as charging and nothing else but I'm sure you can select input/output as well as you can use the Note 8 to charge other phones

I just gave this a try.
1) Connect to USB charger.
2) Put phone in wireless charging cradle.
3) Phone doesn't even attempt to recognize/activate wireless charging.

Connect with a data cable, not a normal USB cable. (You may have to sacrifice a cheap USB cable - just snip one of the power wires.) Then the audio goes to the car head unit, but the phone doesn't see a charger connected, so it will charge wirelessly.

(I originally misread "rapid charge" as "charge". If the head unit does regular charging, it won't charge wirelessly.)

No. No you cannot charge wirelessly when plugged into USB. Myself and others have already said that.

when I have my n8 plugged into my laptop I can put it on the wireless stand and it charges wirelessly and still does data transfer. whether this applies to Android auto I have no idea

Does it actually say, "wirelessly charging"? I just did what you did and the moment I plugged the cable it, it went from saying, "wirelessly charging" to "charging." As soon as I unplugged the cable it reverted back to "wirelessly charging."

You canNOT charge wirelessly with it plugged into to ANY USB.
@Rukbat's method could POSSIBLY work, the problem is knowing which wires in the cable are power and which not.

Like I said previously. You can charge wirelessly and use Android Auto at the same time. You can set Android Auto to automatically turn on when the phone connects to a certain BT device. I have done this with mine. When my Note 8 connects to my car's BT, it automatically starts Android Auto. I just set it in my wireless charger in my car and I get both Android Auto AND wireless charging.

Interesting. My wireless charging stops as soon as I plug it into my computer via USB.

Are the ports on your laptop USB 2 or 3? Mine are USB 3.

did they change the protocol for USB 3? I am using the Samsung cable as well.

USB C uses USB 3. It provides more power and faster data rates. Your laptop USB 2 port isn't providing enough power for fast charging and data transfer, so it reverts to wireless to provide power for charging.

I always figured it switched to whichever was faster.
So, what do the Android auto use? They cannot be very fast and USB 3 is probably way to forward thinking for car stereos.

It's not an issue with Android Auto. It depends on how much power the system is designed to provide. Many of the newer ones are designed for smartphones and tablets and therefore provide higher amperage.

The car makers and aftermarket infotainment manufacturers designed the systems to provide sufficient power to charge while using power hungry apps like Waze or Google Maps.

I have yet to see a car USB port that actually does a good job. I see a big boost in charging when I use a Qualcom Rapid Charge adapter.

So if I hook a wireless charging holder up to the Qualcom 3.0 charger and the USB C data up to the HU for Android Auto it may work? From the above photo you posted it looks possible.
