World phone capabilities?

Will rooting the Verizon S3 make it capable of being used as a world phone? I'm traveling to Europe at the beginning of sept and called Verizon to see if my phone would work. They said that there are plans to make the S3 a world phone (ie. the hardware is in place in the phone) but that they haven't activated the software yet to do so and do not have an ETA on when that will be done. If the phone has the capability built in to be a world phone, will rooting it allow you to access this capability?

Thats quite a process...sigh Maybe next year we will get the official update!

I found this searching XDA. Is this what you're referring too? That is quite the process. Also found instructions for unlocking the bootloader. I assume that's not what I want to make it a world phone though. Wish Verizon would make it a world phone sometime this week!
