Is it worth updating my awesome nexus 4 that's suffering from poor battery life to Android 5.0 in hopes of getting better battery life?

Probably not. You'd get a better boost by using Greenify and keeping any radio you're not using turned off. And by trying to never let the battery get below 40%.
(And if the battery is more than a year old, and you do drain it deeply a lot, the battery is probably pretty well gone - which is why I don't buy phones with batteries that can't be replaced by popping the back cover off. You pay about $100 to get a $10 battery replaced if you have it done in a shop.)
