Hey guys, I could use some help.

My Gateway Desk Top Computer is on Dial-Up, so it is very slow.

I want to use my Droid X 3G Hotspot to drive the Desk Top for a faster system. I know Im limited to 2G/month--thats OK. I have paid the $20/month tetering fee to Verizon.

I bought and installed NetGear Wireless-N 300 USB Adapter WNA 3100.

The Gateway recognizes the Droid X and says it is connected to the internet---but when I open Explorer and try to surf I get no response.

Is it possible that the Droid X will work this way only at the G frequency----although the user guide says the Droid X will connect to G or N Wy-Fy.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Jesse East

The WiFi should be working fine if the computer is recognizing it. Try rebooting the computer and see if it works.
You could also save the $20 a month and the data limit by using a free USB tether app like pda net and just plugging the phone it ..

There is so many things that can cause this issue...

1. I agree - Reboot and retry
2. Do you have a antivirus with a firewall?
3. Have you granted access to card to access internet on PC (Try disabling firewall and see if you connect)
4. Depending on the dial-up service provider, sometimes you have to remove the dialup configuration from the connection page and some required you to install their software that automatically over rides any other connection attempts and this sometimes requires it being removed.. I might can help with more information.... Which Operation system are you using and what provider is your dialup account through.

PM me if you do not feel comfortable post #4 information here and I will see what I can do to help.

i didnt know dial up still existed. i thought it died out with the dinosaurs

any way i agree.....

get PDANet for the market.

It allows you to connect your droid X to your computer via a usb cable. You then start the app on the droid X and start the program on the computer. (you download the computer program from pdanets website). Once you have both applications started you are good to go, no need for any dial up.

pdanet also has a bluetooth option vs usb, so that you dont even need a cable, but im betting since your copmuter didnt have wifi built in, it most liekly doenst have a bluetooth chip either.

drop the extra $20 a month for tethering and dont worry about the data. Verizons data is "capped" at 5G (even though they call it unlimited) and I have never even come close to that after downloading movies/songs even downloading photoshop at 1G for my laptop while driving to another state for business (wasnt surfing while driving, i started the download before i left)

oh and um

WiFi -

Wi ---> Wireless
Fi ---> Fidelity

Many Thanks

O K, Now I have something to work with---thanks to all your suggestions.

BTY---The Gateway is running XP Media and is protected with Norton 360 version 3.0. I have two dial-ups ( Crosslink.net And Toast.net) that are presently active.

More help &/or suggestions are welcomed.

none of that should matter. once you install and use the PDANet app, all internet traffic is coming/going through your phone.

keep in mind that anti-virus software on your computer will still be effective.

think of it as a free (still paying for your cell phone plan) access point to the internet

One last thing, the free version of PDANet does not allow access to secured websites (https://), (paypal) so if you vist them alot you will need to purchase the full version

I'd also highly highly recommend dropping Norton for McAfee of some other anti virus, Norton will reduce system speed about 1/2 or more....its terrible!
