Xbox Live and HTC Evo through Sprint

Ok, I'm getting ready to buy a new phone and I've got it down to a Palm Pre or an HTC Evo. Right now I'm leaning to an Evo, but I was wondering if anyone could clarify something for me.

My friend has a Palm Pre with the Mobile Hotspot app and he plays on Xbox Live. But his connection gets terminated a lot. The connection might last 10 minutes or it might last 45 minutes. Some of the games I might want to play on Live won't be good with that kind of connection problem. He doesn't seem to mind but it would drive me crazy.

Anyhow I hear that Evo has no cap on data service, which really wouldn't be a big deal anyway because online gaming doesn't use all that much data. But I'd like to know if the connection problems are just as bad with the Evo. So if you play on Live or PSN, how's the connection hold up?

BTW...don't bother suggesting I get high speed internet...it's not available in my area. I have satellite and that has horrible latency...way too much for online gaming.

Works perfectly, you gotta root if you want it free though.

Get the evo its a 10000000 times better than the pre.

Rooting an evo and getting the wifi working can be harder than it sounds. I've done both on my evo and they werent all that straight forward. Research it first!

I have no problem with paying for the mobile hotspot service...but I would have a problem if the connection is as intermittent as my friends palm pre. How long are you guys able to play before your connection cuts out, if at all?

If I remember correctly to hotspot the pre he would have had to homebrew, in that case it's not surprising that he had issues staying connected. I'd say evo is had a pre and I bet if your friend picked his up after hotspot it would burn him....

I don't know what homebrew is, and I'm not sure what you're saying in that last sentence. He somehow managed to get it (MHS) on his Pre and since I am due an upgrade at the end of the month, he was going to help me set it up on a Pre if I got it. But I'm not cool with all of the disconnects he has to deal with. I'd rather pay for the service and not have to worry about getting dropped all the time.

The weird thing is that he has a pretty solid connection with his computer (and I've used his connection with my computer with no issues)...it just cuts out on Xbox Live.

Homebrew is the hacking community for the pre they do all sorts of nifty things with the pre. That is likely how he got mhs on the pre in the first place. And the burning bit was because the pre has a notorious problem with over heating and running a mhs on it seems like the kind of thing that would heat it up.

I won't be biased like the rest here and just guarantee it'll work.

If your friend's Pre runs on Sprint, don't expect miracles from the EVO. Cellular connections were not meant for online gaming, and on 3G it's not uncommon for ping to jump as high as 500ms or more, which can make a connection look like its died to XBOX Live. While no doubt it's better than your satellite option, it is not going to be as stable or as fast as cable/DSL.

Coming from a Pre myself, though, I would highly recommend the EVO anyway. The Pre's app selection is abysmal, and the performance of the EVO runs circles around the Pre.

And yet, what are you gonna do when they teir our data service because of so many people streaming insane amounts of data

NOT a big deal with online games. That's a question you might want to ask someone who downloads a lot of movies or something. People have this misconception that online gaming is download intensive...it's not.

Anyway, thanks for all the help guys, I've decided to try out the EVO when I'm eliglible for an upgrade at the end of the month.

if your buy mobile hotspot, your able to use wifi tether on any device of even 52 gigs like i did last month

if you want to root it, then wifi tether then try it, but its only going to give more reason to put a cap on data since your not paying for tethering to other devices

How is it not a big deal when it comes to gaming?

If you are tethering your phone to your xbox and playing something like call of duty or halo you willgo through gigabytes of information FAST!!

Lol...no you're not, do some research. Online gaming is a lot of small packets of information being uploaded and downloaded. There's no way you'd go through gigabytes of data playing for a few hours a day.

Correct. Not to mention that they are advertising the mobile hotspot as a feature of the phone...why wouldn't anyone use it for whatever they wanted? Especially if you're going to be paying an EXTRA 30 bucks a month.

Yeah, uhm, no you won't. Bandwidth is not to be confused with ping. You'd barely use 50MB an hour in your typical FPS.

Wow, i feel like an idiot newb lol. And now were back on topic

Okay well I tethered my Evo to my 360 to test this for you, Using the paid for mobile hotspot. In a 3g area with 3-5 bars (it jumps but stays at 5 the most).
I tethered playing Halo Reach online. Played for about 3 hours or so with only one connection loss( got a phone call haha) ... But other than that there was no lag and no problems. Just make sure you tell people not to call you :)
