Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 - handset volume seems low

Okay so I bought my new Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 just a couple of days ago and I am mostly thrilled with how good it is. But..... first and foremost it's meant to be a phone - right? So what's going on with the headset volume when making calls? I have had several phone conversations during the last couple of days, mostly calling landlines. During most of these calls I have had to struggle to hear everything that the other person is saying, which isn't great when I am making work related calls. And all of these calls have been in the relative quiet environment of my home. I am dreading making a call outside. In all the amazing publicity about the phone nobody has mentioned this. And I can't see anything in the settings to enable me to turn up the volume for phone calls. I don't think returning the phone is an option because the problem doesn't seem bad enough for that, just irritating. Apart from using hands free instead, are there any other solutions? Or are there any apps that can boost the volume for calls?
