Yahoo Mail app DRAINING BATTERY!!!

I downloaded the Yahoo Mail app because accessing yahoo mail via the email pop on the device was not that good. So I tried Yahoo Mail app. It was great. Problem was that it drained the batter at nearly double the pace. I used to get over 12 hours on 4G and then after I downloaded the Yahoo Mail app, I would get about 7 or 8 hours at most.

Anyone else try this???

Are you sync/push settings different now for the yahoo app vs. the android one?

I just looked and I don't see any polling adjustments. It must be instant... all the time.

I had the same issue with the yahoo mail app draining my battery by constantly looking for new emails and the htc mail app is now completely useless! I uninstalled the Yahoo mail app within a day it was battery hungry. And to make matters worse a few days later I installed it again to check my mail and my phone was being a little wacky after install so i used the phones restart feature and that started unending reboot loop!! I had no other programs running at the time. I tried repeated battery pulls to no avail I had to go to a verizon store and have them do a master factory reset on my phone! Needless to say I was PISSED!! My phone is fine now i have to log on to my yahoo mail via the internet now since the yahoo mail app is complete CRAP!! If you have the Yahoo Mail app installed I recommend UNINSTALLING ASAP!! To avoid reboot loops! Do not use this program! It screwed my rezound up so bad it needed a master factory reset!!

I have been using the Yahoo mail app on my phones for over a year and on my Tab since I got it. I never experienced these extreme issues. Not saying you're wrong just sharing a different experience. However, I am concerned about this battery issue. I don't know if I have it because I haven't had the Rezound long enough to develop a pattern. I'd like to hear more though.

With the yahoo mail app I was barely able to get 7-8 hours of light to moderate usage if that while i was at work. That is why I will never put it on my phone again. Normally on typical work day I usually have between 35% and 55% battery remaining depending on how I have used it in a 8 hour period with everything on manual sync. On a typical weekend I can get almost to whole weekend out of the battery with light-moderate use having to plug it in on sunday night. The yahoo app has no manual sync feature therefore it is constantly on looking for new emails.

What does this thread tell me? Set up your yahoo account to forward all of your emails to a gmail account, then be happy. :)

But doesn't that make all your replies come from your gmail account?

Is there a problem with that? Migrate everything over lol

I really don't know what to say though. If the yahoo app is using battery and attempting to maintain constant contact, you may just have to use your browser to visit yahoo mail instead of the app.

When I look at what programs are running, Yahoo Mail is not one of them. Also, when I open Yahoo Mail, it takes a few seconds to collect the latest mail. Doesn't this point to the fact that Yahoo is NOT constantly collecting mail?

Oh wait... I just found that my phones auto sync was off! But my tablet is on. I didn't see a difference in Yahoo all this time though.

Now I don't think I understand auto sync.

You could just try Maildroid app. Its a free 3rd party app that I've found works best with Yahoo mail specifically. I receive my Yahoo emails almost instantly without dealing with polling issues like you do on K9 or HTC, and since my Yahoo mail is my main account, I tested everything for at least a month before I settled happily on Maildroid. No battery drain either. You could forward your mail to gmail like another guy suggested, but if you want to stay within yahoo mail and have access to all your folders, etc. and have a clean, fast app that handles Yahoo mail REALLY well, try it. Oh and the developer is THE most responsive and helpful developer who responds within HOURS, not days, to all email questions/requests. The app is always updating and improving and adding new features so if there's something you don't like or dont understand, email him and he'll help you. I ended up paying for the paid version (which is the same just with no ads) to support the dev but its your call. Since email is a HUGE part of my life, and yahoo mail had occasional issues for me when I first got my phone, Maildroid was what saved me so I've since been one to quickly prescribe it to solve most email issues that I see on these forums. I just bought my mom the Rezound which is why I'm here. It's a badass phone and hopefully this advice helps your situation. Good luck!

Thanks!!! Are you using POP access to Yahoo? Did you have to pay for that?

No and no. You don't have to pay for that. The app is free unless you want to pay quite a bit for the "pro" version which is the same as the free one but without ads. I ended up paying for the Pro version to support the developer who was so helpful over the last 8 months to me answering any question that I had almost immediately. It's expensive though so just use the free app for now. It's great.

And the way you set up Yahoo is just by letting the "AUTO SETUP" take care of everything. You type in your yahoo email and pswd and then hit Auto Setup and let it take care of the rest. It actually makes the yahoo account an IMAP account, not a POP account. I always figured, as long as it works great and I get my emails fast, then I'm happy.

The app has changed and grown over time and the developer listens to peoples requests. I now run my Yahoo account and my IMAP business account exclusively through MD and its been great. I have a Thunderbolt that never had the issues others were having so I'm happy. But I'm aware of other phones and like I said before I bought my mom a Rezound for Christmas (better specs and camera than GNex and it'll have 4.0 soon enough). Try Maildroid even for one week. See if you like it. If there's something you don't get, email the developer and he'll respond right away. I wish all other apps, especially the ones with millions of downloads had the same customer care. To me that's why I'm loyal.

SMD - THANK YOU! I really appreciate the detailed information. I decided to download it and sure enough, it accesses my Yahoo mail which I thought was impossible without paying Yahoo for pop access. You opened my eyes!!!

Not to hijack this thread but maybe you can answer this one question. We are all talking about the number of times Yahoo polls for messages. On Maildroid, it has "Connection management" One of the choices is "close connection when I exit the mailbox" and under that is an interval setting. I should have that option selected then pick an interval that it will "wake up" and check, right?

THANKS AGAIN!

P.S. I also support developers like you do. If this works out, I'll probably pay that high price. I already paid for Touchdown but I use it for work email and I'd like to keep it separate. It's not cheap either.

No and no. You don't have to pay for that.

Thanks! I remember a *long* time ago Yahoo started charging for POP3 access. I guess they stopped doing that at some point!

I just added my Yahoo email account to K-9 and it looks to be working great. Will be uninstalling the Yahoo Mail app after I post this!

Can you explain how you did this? I got it to auto-setup EXCEPT the outgoing server. It wouldn't let me send any email. Maildroid is working but I'd like to compare the two.

Auto-setup worked perfectly for me. I didn't have to enter anything besides email address, password, and a "From" name. I've tested both sending and receiving mail.
Looking at my Outgoing mail settings:

Security type: TLS (if available)
Port: 587
"Require sign-in" checked
