Yet another battery drain thread

So here it is, and believe me when I say, I did the proper research on google and android central forums before I post this. But since the whole situation seems just like a joke with no reasonable answers, I have to ask.

Got a brand new HTC One M8s (notice the s as in new edition of the old M8). It's supposed to have a great battery according to sources and acually, at times it has shown that as well. At one point last week-end, I got the phone to run over 50 hours with 2 days of "normal" use, and normal use with a new phone is more or less more than normal in any other case. Normal use is maybe a couple of hours of phone calls, 3-4 hours of music and podcasts etc. So with this result, I was very happy.

This is varying though. Mostly, like the last week for example, I get shat in the face by the battery life. Just for stats I did this last night: Unplugged it at 100% around 10 pm. Didn't use it at all, except setting an alarm. Battery was down to 85 % by 12 pm when I went to sleep. I wake up at 7:30 am with 50 % and I get to work (still not even using the phone) and at work I try to restart the phone to see if there are any crazy things in the background killing the battery. Restart at 44 %, when it starts anew, it's at 23 %. I mean, WHAT? So the battery has just gone from 100 % to 23 % in 10 hours with NO USE AT ALL?

Ofc, I have tried most things. Removed all the auto-syncs, installed greenify to kill the instagram app that I thought was the theif. I have updated to the last software version (whichever it might be) and been in general battery smart. I've done so many things, that is actually killing the functionality of the phone (like the sync, ofc a phone is supposed to be able to automatically sync the weather and mail so I don't have to check in manually???). After looking at the stats, I believe that the wake lock might partly be my bug, but it can't be the whole answer, because no other post I've seen about wake locks kills the phone this fast? Though, the flight-mode is actually a real battery saver, so it might be something that is shutting down at flight mode.

So look at the screen shots below:

I'm flabbergasted and I surely need your help. I bought a new phone MAINLY because I couldn't get enough battery life out of my old iPhone 4s.

Looks like Google services is draining a large portion of your battery. Try disabling location services and see if you notice a difference.

I play with my food

That is one of the first things I did actually, hasn't been on for several weeks.

edit: and from what I've understood from other forums posts is that google services is actually more or less the OS itself?

I think power consumed by the OS is represented in the stats by both "Android System" & "Android OS". I am a little hazy on why there are the two different entries. My understanding is that the "Google Services" process encompasses items such as location reporting and all the syncing between your phone and Google's servers (ie calendar, contacts, books, etc.).
40% seems too high to me. For comparison, take a look at my stats. Now, this is from a Z3c running 4.4.4 so not directly analgous, however my "Google services" consumed only 5% after 15.5hrs of up time.

Have you checked the sync settings under your Google account to make sure there isnt some sort of sync error? Also, remember that you can always perform a factory reset if all else fails. Since the battery life was good at one point, a factory reset would probably get you back there.

40 % is far too high, considering that I've actually turned off almost all automatic sync items from that list, AND considering that 40 % of almost 80 % battery drain, is a lot for syncing ;) . I only have one inbox and one calendar left syncing (which is as I explained not the way it's supposed to be, I really do appreciate the fact that the phone syncs from time to time). And no, I cannot find any "errors", they all say last sync completed at blabla-time.

I'm having this problem too , turned off google now and search, downloaded Gsam to see what was draining my battery and it was also the android OS and android kernel.Did a factory reset as well as wiping cache partition, but still didn't work for me. considering to root this phone and slap it a new custom rom that might improve the battery life - HTC ONE M8s

Is this a once in a while issue, or do you get these results daily? If it's daily, have you checked your Wi-Fi and mobile signal strengths to see if the phone may be having trouble searching and locking onto the signals where you keep it overnight?

If it's a regular occurrence and one you've seen gradually get worse over time, it could simply be the battery losing capacity. This could be simply a defective/weak battery from the start, but charging habits can affect its life too.

A wakelock problem looks to be your best bet. Judging by your screen shot in post #1, your cell and wifi signals seem fine.

Have you tried using CPU Spy to verify that your phone is not spending the majority of its time in "deep sleep"? (Which it sure doesn't seem to be doing.) Have you uninstalled and re-installed any apps, especially Google apps, to make sure that they are all up to date?

And can you still return the phone as defective?

It's a new phone, so I don't think it's the battery "getting gradually worse over time". And it's not a defective battery since it's not a daily occurrence, it happens now maybe every three days. Sometimes I get 2 days full with normal usage. Some days I'm down to 25 % within hours. I CAN'T SEE WHAT DIFFERENCE IT MIGHT BE? I'm at the same places (home and work), I do more or less the same thing, which is calling, texting, facebook-chatting and snapchatting etc. Not using the phone for any games at all. I've turned off almost ALL the syncing, just gmail, contacts and calendar left now. IT SUCKS, because I feel like I'm every day disabling more and more features that makes a smartphone a smartphone. And for what? Still Google Services says it's using between 25-40 % of the total battery drain and there is no real method to know what specifically causes the drain. It has to be something. I'm getting crazy. Especially now when I'm going on a 2 week trek this weekend and I need the phone to be ALIVE for backup in case I need it, and it would be wonderful if I could actually use it slightly for example podcasts and audio books.

I REALLY thought that Android was maturing and could be good alternative for iPhone, but now I'm loosing faith. So much work I've put down to fix this really really irritating issue and now solution is sight yet. COME ON GOOGLE!

4 hours off charger on 3G. 4G is off since 4G is spotty near my job. Made a call, checked some text messages and of course pulled up my battery stats. Location/GPS off, auto sync off, vibration off, auto brightness off, screen brightness set at 35%, I never auto update apps, I'm also logged out of all apps such as Facebook. I don't use instagram twitter or snapchat. Like I said I only checked a couple text messages and made a phone call. I would periodically check my battery percentage by double tapping to wake the phone and I took a few screen shots of my battery status, I did all of this during the 4 hours and my battery still remained at 100%. I've had this phone for over a year.

The phone is using more power than it can draw from the charger (the design of the phone determines how much it can draw). Look in your battery stats to see what's drawing most of the power. If there's noting unusual, see if Ampere will run on the M8. If it does, see how much current the phone is using when it's not being charged, and how much current is charging it when it's plugged into the wall charger. The charging current should be higher than the using (discharging) current. If not, you could have a blown capacitor on the motherboard.

I've lost faith with HTC.
My HTC One Mini 2's battery is pretty much dead after 10 months.
After charging it up to 100% during the night, I'll lose 50% of power by 2 pm, and the kicker is that when it hits 49% it turns off.

Back to Nokia or iPhone.

Sounds like the battery was shot, and your charging habits likely played a role in it. There's always a chance of a bad component, so there's no reason to let that one issue taint your view of the company.

But also, lithium batteries don't like being held at a high charge level (usually considered anything over 75%). When you plug in at night, it doesn't take long to fully charge. Then it sits there at 100% for hours on end every night. That alone may not have caused it to go bad that quick, but I'm sure it played a part in it.

My habits were tha same with my cheap yet very effective Nokia Lumia 710, which I'll have to dust off to use while the 6S allows preordering.

I'm super mad. Sorry if it sounds aggresive, I'm just pointing out that my habits are not something out of this world.

I have been having the EXACT SAME ISSUES with my M8... it won't charge even when it's off and won't hold a charge!!
All the research I did on this phone and it's so disappointing! It says my phone is using too much power to charge, I tried everything even a factory reset...and still getting the same message!! Wtf this is obviously a malfunctioning phone if we all have the same issues I want my money back!!

Hi Marcy, if you're still under Warranty have HTC fox it and ebay it. Or ask for a refund/exchange.
My sitiation nowadays is that my phone shuts down after using it 15 minutes, doesnt matter if its at 93% on battery.

Tried using the warranty but since I bought it off ebay from a seller in indonesia, HTC will charge me $20+S&H JUST to look at it.

I bought a new battery and as soon as I replace it, im going to sell it.

Worst buy ever.
