posted this in another thread, here it is in case you missed it:

go here, user said it worked for his Thunderbolt & i can confirm the Dialer code does open the hidden menu on my Thunderbolt

http://forum.androidmobilejunkie.com/threads/htc-desire-hidden-menu.31/

you're basically going into the phone & telling it to manually switch over to something like CDMA only, or EvDo only

scroll down, see the SetPreferred Network Type--from which you can choose what Network type the phone will then use

Network Type options:
CDMA auto (PRL)
CDMA only
EvDo only
CDMA + LTE /EvDo auto
LTE MODE

these options are shown--and any one of them can be chosen.

to clarify/summarize: Go into testing mode by dialing *#*#4636#*#* > phone information > Scroll down and Select preferred network type to be "CDMA auto (PRL)" rather than the default "CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto" (thanks PandaPaul)

not responsible if this hurts your phone---putting it out there that there is in fact a way to switch radios

Edit: note, it also says
"GSM SERVICE: in service"----kind of interesting
