I remember my first Honor clearly. I bought it from Best buy and I remember opening it in my vehicle and setting it up just sitting there for probably over an hour as I was amazed at the software interface. I remember thinking to myself this is a awesome phone! I couldn't get over how cool the interface was and how different it was compared to anything I'd ever used before. It had to be that I played with that new phone over an hour before I pulled away. Then shortly after that I had a chance to get the Nexus 6p at a good deal which I did but I missed the honor so much that I ended up getting rid of the 6p and getting another honor which I used for a long time. Anyone else remember your thoughts of the first time you used an honor 8? Post them up. Curious to hear your initial reactions to EMUI.

I wasn't a fan of emui 4 but i liked emui 5.

You can read my thoughts on the honor 8 here :

I'll check it out. I guess it will answer my question which is what did you not like about 4.1 compared to 5.0? I didn't see much change between the two as EMUI was still the same feel. By the way has the honor 8 gotten 5.1 or will the honor 8 get 5.1? I thought I read somewhere that the 8 was or will get 5.1??

That's quite a review. Well written and well layed out. That was also quite a nice gesture to be sent the Honor to test out and review. My mistake earlier as I thought you said you disliked 4.1 vs 5.0 but I see where you said 4.0 which I'm not familiar with. I came to honor when it had 4.1 which I liked a lot. I believe I liked it a bit better than 5.0 but only because it was further away from stock Android which I do not like really all that much. Stock pure Android to me is rather choppy and sticky if you go pure stock.

I 100 percent agree with you about the camera. The honor 8 has a very high end camera. Now that I have the S8 with it's killer camera I now see just how great of a camera that the honor 8 has that I definitely took for granted all that time.

You're also very right about the honor 8 having quite a few flagship specs at a mid range price. This is another reason I keep coming back to it. I really see no need for me to have all this money tied up in my S8 when I can get the 64g Honor 8 when it's on sale for around $300 vs $750 for my S8 that I oh so badly had to have. Don't get me wrong. The S8 is an awesome device but so is the Honor 8 at under half the price.

Great review again and congrats for being chosen to have the honor to get to review the Honor! I found your review to be very thorough and deep with knowledge. My hat is off to you and nicely done.

Lastly EMUI to me is just so vastly different than Android. To me it's not even the same software. The interface is completely different but to me that's a very good thing. I find EMUI a joy to use and it's also very fluid. Very smooth. Some say it's a lot like IOS and in a way I could be but I think it's a hybrid software falling in between Android and IOS so it's in a league of it's very own to me. I am one to easily think it could be branded as a third mobile software choice within the mobile tech industry which I'm sure to some that sounds extreme but just wait until Huawei does officially it's here in the US and signs up with the four carriers. Watch how fast they will grow and have their cult like following of EMUI and how they will rival Samsung just because of EMUI. It's just that different. A lot can happen in the next three years so I maybe totally wrong but I see them surpassing Samsung here by year two or three of being here. I just hope they stay true to EMUI and stay true to their innovation and core pricing and they will give Samsung a huge thorn in their side that's for sure.

It has been some time since I used emui4 but from what I remembered, i didn't like the no app drawer, though that could be solved with a third party launcher. Also the notification panel was pretty different than other manufacturers. There might have been some other things but i don't remember

If you are comparing sales prices... The Verizon s8 is currently $420 with dpp, no trade in required. It is factory sim unlocked just like the honor 8, so no need to worry about unlocking it.

You can also flash the unlocked software.

The nice thing is i it's available in the note 7 coral blue

Of course $420 is still significantly more than $300 you mentioned but might be worth the price difference for some.

I hope that's not an indication of what I'll get for my S8 bc I'd keep it before I sold it at $400 dollars. I at least want to get $550 out of it. If I can't then I'll of course keep it and not get the honor 8 at that low of a resell price. My S8 is totally unlocked and has been flashed to remove any carrier branding. It's like I bought an arctic silver direct from Samsung which you can't do. Only midnight black.

Well you can buy an unlocked s8 in another color other than black as well... From another retailer though, and price is $575 so hopefully you will be able to get $550. But even if you get a little bit less, that should be more than enough to get the honor 8 or mate 9.

Also... Unless you are hard up selling it as unlocked, selling it as the sprint version might net a higher price from my cursory check of swappa todao... But of course it isn't running Sprint software anymore. You should check out where to plan to sell it to see which sells for more and flash back, if it happens to be that sprint does.

Thanks for your story, Dconn!

I bought my Honor 8 online, from Newegg. I couldn't wait for it to come in the mail! I would be checking the tracking number online constantly.

When it came to my door, I was excited! But I was afraid to insert the SIM card on my own (because, well, it's me); but it wasn't really my fault, because I had to get my SIM card cut for it to fit in the dual SIM tray. Seeing that guy cut it made me very nervous! But when it turned on and I saw the "Honor" blue screen, I was so happy and relieved.

I liked setting it up, but I tend to get a little bit overwhelmed (also very much excited) with new phones and their ways of doing things; so I customized things as I was able. I took an immediate liking to EMUI 4.1 and loved the themes!

It's so hard to let go of this phone today. I want a new phone next year but I don't know if I'll be able to say goodbye to my Honor 8! Good thread topic!

I agree with you that this phone is hard to get rid off. It isn't my primary phone due to it not being compatible with my carrier but yet I haven't been able to get rid of it

Good story. Glad you liked your honor. Sounds like you were similar to me and loved it immediately. I'm dying to get another one. I'm just waiting on my S8 to be officially unlocked do I can sell it. I'll loose on the deal but I've lost on every deal so what's new. Lol.

Can you still return it? If so then you are only out restocking fee , and then can buy an honor 8 outright!

Thank you! And yes, it was love at first sight for me! Yes, that will be exciting for you! Pearl White is a beautiful white, for sure!

I will always be a fan of emui 4.1, to me it was the best ui that has been developed. It just did so many thing right for me. I remember how amazed I was to the quality of the honor 8. I actually returned the axon 7 and picked up the honor 8 at best but. The thing that I lived the most was the colored notification icons. I also like how the pull down shade was separated and how you could pull down from the right or left and get the notifications or get the quick toggles. I hate pulling down the notifications and having to swipe down again to get to all the toggles. Emui 4.1 solved that issue with making them separate yet very functional.

I agree: 4.1 was awesome! It's not that I dislike 5.0, but it's a bit of nostalgia mixed with "how can you improve upon an already-good thing?" for me. 😜

Now that the 9 is out, would the 8 still be a good purchase especially at the lower, reduced prices?

Definitely still a good buy. In fact I'm thinking about getting my third honor 8 now. Of course I'd be getting the honor 9 but I personally don't think we'll see it here in the US until December if we are that lucky. Not anytime soon so yes that right there still makes the honor 8 still a very good buying decision. It's one of the most well rounded phones you will find and especially at its price point. I now want a Pearl White honor 8. In a way I want to hold out for the honor 9 but again I honestly don't see it being released to the US before December and I say December only bc it would make good marketing strategy for honor to at least release it here before Christmas to big time boost initial sales of the device. I also know they aren't going to release it until the honor 8 has totally played out and you see it still very much has buyer appeal even still now. If you are thinking about one and I'm thinking about another one just think how many more who also are thinking about the honor 8. If there was an announced release date of the honor 9, that would be the only reason I'd not buy the honor 8 right now. It's still very much so a good purchase. It's a flat out awesome device. Camera is unbelievable too.

Most definitely. The honor 9 is an incremental upgrade to the honor 8. IMO, performance in normal usage, you probably won't be able to tell much of a difference. The camera is improved, but the honor 8 camera is pretty good already. There are some other differences like cpu upgrade and fps placement. I don't really think that these upgrades significantly improve the experience for most users. So if you can get an honor 8 at a significantly lower price than the Honor 9 and are OK with having a slightly older, slightly less well specd phone, then sure why not?

The only concern would be software updates... In theory the honor 8 should be supported for a shorter period from today...

Well said. Updates are one thing I did not think about. That said I believe honor will go the extra mile with the honor 8 as far as updates. Security and what not. It was such a huge success for them and even though the honor 9 has come out yet the honor 8 still lives strong. Just an awesome device all the way around. I suspect honor will honor updates for a long while to come on the 8. Anyone who is still thinking about getting one like I am you aren't alone. Like this nice guy said real world we all hardly will be able to tell a difference between the two phones and another thing he stated that I want to definitely verify is the honor 8 does indeed have a very very good camera. I was spoiled by it bc I briefly changed to another phone before I got my S8 which does have a good camera but the phone I briefly had did not and I can tell you I noticed that. I immediately knew right then just how good of a camera the honor 8 in fact did have. Well said my friend.
