Your device software can't be checked for corruption

Hi everyone, I have just received an new, sealed in box pixel phone. However, when I power it on I get the error "Your device software can't be checked for corruption. Please lock the bootloader". The phone appears to work fine. It also updated to android Pie. Am I OK to use it or should I return it?

I should also add there is a Magisk Manager app preinstalled which I don't like the look of.

Where did you get it? This sounds like a badly refurbished device (not new). I would NOT be signing into it but rather contacting the seller for a refund or replacement.

It was from eBay. I'm in the UK and there is info on the box about it being imported by Google Canada. Was sold new and unlocked. Wasn't sure if the warning was because it has been unlocked.

It's definitely not "new." Magisk, from what I can tell because I don't have it myself, it's an app that requires root to fully utilize. That alone tells me your phone has been tampered with.

Exactly how was it sealed when you got it? That could also clue us in on things. For example, I've seen several users state they bought a "new" LG V20 with similar questionable programming. As they put it, the phones couldn't have been tampered with because they were still shrink wrapped on delivery. That would be all well and good, except LG doesn't shrink wrap their phones at the factory. It was third party resellers tampering with (refurbished?) phones, packaging them to make them appear new, and then selling as a new device.

Unlocked can mean a couple of different things. Being carrier unlocked is common, and just means you can use it on any carrier you want as long as it supports the frequency bands of the phone. That wouldn't trip that warning message. An unlocked boot loader means someone rooted the phone and enabled it to have custom programming and such that should not be possible by the average user and with a factory stock phone. Whatever they did to it is what is causing that warning to appear.

Time to ask for a refund.

File a claim with eBay "item not as described" because it is not brand new. It has been tampered with and insecure software has been installed. No Google Pay and no warranty.
