I have a moto x pure and it died today thanks to the charging port and now I'm on the market for a new phone. My first few phones were motorola and I never liked them too much, then I tried the samsung galaxy s3 years ago and love it but had to replace it because I wanted android auto. Well, went back to moto as I was looking for an unlocked cheap phone and got the x pure and never liked it.
Now that I want to come back to samsung I found out that the glass on galaxy s7 and the s8 break easily and now I don't know what else I could get. I'm not really a fan of the infinite screen but I like big phones so I was actually looking at the s8+.

Does the screen really brake that easy?

What other phones are similar to samsung that doesn't have this screen issues?

Is there a way to avoid breaking the screen with a screen protector or a good cover?

Thanks in advance.

Glass is glass, simple as.
If you drop glass it is subject to breakage.
The screen is really no more fragile than other curved glass screens.

I have a Spigen case and have dropped my phone a lot. No cracks or anything. In short, get a case.

Dropped mine once on a carpet from 3ft. The Spigen body was on and no harm was done.
But a mate of mine dropped it without any cover or body and has the infamous cracked corner, on both sides. He also has several small scratches on the front due to the softness of the glass.
I myself have a shadow of the Google maps bar on the right side of my screen. Faint but still there. I guess 3 hours usage for navigation is too much for infinity screens.

So yeah, those screens are prone to damage.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about the glass composition of Samsung phones. Yes, it is glass, but if you are relatively careful with your phones and will use a good case with it, you will probably be just fine. I used my Honor 8 (a glass phone) for 14 months and it held up fine; and my fiancé is in the military and used it sans screen protector for two weeks and it did not sustain any damage.

I think glass backed phones are made more durable these days; but as other users have said, glass is glass. Best to treat it with a good case and a screen protector (tempered glass works best, in my opinion). Also, if you are still concerned, getting some insurance or extra warranty coverage on your phone could always be an option.

Let us know what you decide!

Thanks guys, I understand the point that glass is glass but it looks like these phones are more prone for breaking the glass. I have dropped my pure x many times as i work outdoors and the screen is good, I do have the otterbox defender and a glass protection thou. Went go see it in person and I really liked it, I also saw the essential and liked it to but it's kind of small for me. While doing a search I found a huawei mate se and it has great reviews, I know is a budget phone but for what I used it for it should work, I just browse the net, use android auto, music, use Bluetooth, and use Google maps alot.

For me samsung is my first option a lots it has been the phone that I have enjoyed the most.

If I do get it, I would get a lots otterbox or something similar plus the glass protection for sure.

dropping the phone naked on any surface that isn't carpet over 1ft will more often than not destroy the screen (or at the very minimum have a small crack)

Because the screen is curved it is SUPER fragile, I use a case when I leave the bedroom of my house. If I'm downstairs the case is on. Bathroom the case is on. Only in bed I use the phone naked no case because the first S8 I had I dropped it in the shower and it shattered the screen, than after repairing it a year later I dropped it about 2ft on to tile and it destroyed the back glass.

So long story short. Case is needed to keep the phone in good condition and crack free if you're dropping your phone like me
