Updated:

Handcent
Launcher Pro
DoggCatcher
Good
Weatherbug Elite

Honorable Mention:
SwiftKey
Sportstap
Facebook
Act 1 Video Player
Age of Conquest
RoboDefense
Angry Birds

AppBrain
Handcent SMS
EStrongs File Explorer
Alchemy
Google Voice

The first four are the ones I've found the most useful (though I have a couple of others I'd suggest putting up there, but they're mainly for those of you using SSH - ConnectBot and AndFTP). Google Voice is promising to become more useful with the widgets it comes with allowing me to more easily switch between sending calls either via my cell or GV number. Thing is, I can't remember the last time I got voice mail ...

Oh, and don't ever download Hypnotoad. It's a piece of cra-ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD!

Outside of the core Google-branded apps, such as Gmail & Maps, here are my top 5 (in no particular order):

1. LauncherPro Plus (Homescreen Launcher)
2. ASTRO (File Manager)
3. PicSay Pro (Photo Editing)
4. Cubed "3" (Music Player)
5. Touiteur (Twitter App)

Honorable Mention: Pandora, Beautiful Widgets, Google Voice, AppBrain, Vignette, Dropbox, Shazam, Amazon MP3, and BattStatt

Droid X here. So many to choose from, but my magic five are:

1. Launcher Pro
2. ROM Manager (I've been on 2.2 and FlyX for a while now without issue. Updated to the latest OTA version with Beesley's build.props this morning - Smooth sailing)
3. Root Explorer
4. Tweetcaster (tried Twitter native, Toutieur, and Twidroid and always come back. Love the widget and FB sync).
5. Dolphin Browser HD - Next level.

Honorable mentions (sorry, five is impossible):

1. iReal Book (pro musician here, and I use that app on gigs constantly).
2. Kindle (yeah, I went there - love and use constantly. When home, my Droid X syncs to the last read spot on my Kindle DX. This = awesome)
3. Tapatalk
4. Vignette, FX and Retro Cameras
5. Pure Calendar widget
6. NFL App - Live streaming game? Insane.
7. Cubed music player
8. Pandora
9. Zedge
10. Folder Organizer

I have the Droid 2. These are the programs I use or intend to use regularly:

Super Manager (Root)
Wireless Tether (Root)
Navigation
Weatherbug
Tone Picker
Google Voice Texting
Myspace
Facebook
Twitter
Quick Office
Voice Search
Youversion Bible
Droid Light
Camera
Camcorder
Browser
Calculator
CarDock
Calendar
Latitude
Email

I'm hoping to find more friends with Androids so I can use TiKL

TuneIn Radio - Android app on AppBrain
Music Junk

TuneIn Radio is cool because it collects AM and FM internet radio stations from all over the world, and its easily searchable by topic, station, location, or even language.

The 2nd link, Music Junk allows you to search for mp3s on your phone, preview and download them. Usually has good variety

01. Pandora
02. Launcher Pro
03. Beautiful Widgets
04. Quick App Clean Cache
05. Twicca

I'm constantly adding to my list of honorable mentions, but currently they are: Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Bible, Laputa, Movies, SportsTap, SwiftKey, man the list goes on. I'm forgetting good ones, but my phone's off for the night and I can't remember w/o looking through them!

Any golfers out there? How are the GPS apps?
What are the best ones?

I use free caddie pro. one time fee of $14.99 or something. Has a simple interface that gives you yardage to green, bunkers, hazards. Also, has a fly over view allowing you to see the entire hole from above, and allows you to click anywhere to get yardage to that point. Also lets you keep your score and upload to save your scores.

For the price, I think it is the best app that gives me what I want. Be warned, the gps burns through your battery. With stock battery, you get 18 holes, and then I had about 30% battery left. With extended verizon battery, I get 18 holes and still have 70% battery left!

Oh, and they let me transfer my fee from windows mobile (I had a samsung omnia, what a piece of crap btw) to android. No questions asked! Highly recommend.

Hope this helps.

Just found a new one today, hopefully not a repeat within the 35 pages so far.

Multicon Widget- allows four widgets in the space of one. You also have the option to shortcuts within the multicon so that you can have four direct call numbers or messages. Check it out, its free!
Great widget! One quick question: How do you set direct call numbers?

My current faves ...

First post. My current faves are:

Handcent SMS - The way all text messaging clients should be.

Quick Battery - Great details and allows you to have its icon launch any app you choose. I believe it uses less battery than all other battery widgets I've tried.

Volume Control - Lets me have three pre-set profiles that control all things volume-related on the phone. I have one for "Loud," "Vibrate" and "Sleep." Simply touch one and it loads up everything for you.

AppBrain - Easy to use substitute for the Market.

Pandora - The best music app for lazy people who don't want to go through the effort of making their own library.

Apps Organizer - Lets me bundle related apps into a single file. It also lets you place icons on your home screen for each bundle. I have one each for "Games," "Multimedia," "Tools" and "Other Apps."

NFL Mobile - If you're into football, it's a must-have.

My Tracks - Great way to know all about your hikes, trail runs, etc. Shares well, too.

Caffeine - Keeps your home screen lit no matter the phone's status. Excellent for night time when you don't have (or want) a dock. Very cool icon as a bonus.

Launcher Pro - Allows all the customization without all the bloat.

Hmm a few gems I've uncovered would be:

1. USA Today.
Keeps me updated and it's so easy to read!

2. EasyMoney.
I think people usually overlook the importance of tracking their finances.
I was at one point of a time spending so much because I didn't keep track of my expenditure. With EasyMoney I saved a lot and stop spending on redundant stuff and no more late credit card payments!

3. Slide Puzzle.
Good time killer and keeps me awake!

I totally agree with you. EasyMoney is really useful and a very good app!

the ones I use the most
- PlayerPro: BEST Music Player
- Seesmic: BEST Twitter
- Handcent SMS: Great SMS client
- Skyfire and Xcope lite: Internet browsers
- eBuddy: great im client

"quick settings" also lets yo toggle gps at any time from any app so you dont have to stop what you are doing..slide down notification bar and all settings are at your fingertips.
