Your way to update to MD4

Hi all - first time post, please be gentle.
When I tried installing the update (either through OTA or the version in Post #1), it gives me an error message in stock recovery related to a patch for YahooStockwidget.apk. (I uninstalled that program a few weeks ago through Titanium Backup, and had no ill effects til now.) Otherwise, stock ROM (MB1), rooted, with stock recovery.

Tried unsuccessfully to re-install Yahoostockwidget.apk from a site online, and the program is no longer available on GooglePlay. Is my best bet to backup and factory reset? Anyone know if that will re-install this program?

Thanks in advance.

I am not sure if that will fix it. A factory reset won't bring back your old ROM, just reset all your data under the current one.

does this require baseband MB1 or build number MB1?

If you're not rooted, or have stock recovery, and are following Post #1, then yes, you need to be on MB1. Search, and you'll find threads entitled "Your way to update to MA6" and "Your way to update to MB1".

If you're rooted, and using CWM or TWRP recovery, and following post #2, it doesn't matter what version you're currently on.

Was this program pre-installed on the phone? If so, as post #1 says:

And if you have the Stock Rom (rooted or unrooted) with all needed bloatware

In other words, you must have all the apps installed exactly as in the original OEM configuration or the update will fail. At this point, I think your only options are to unroot (see the sticky in the Sprint rooting section here), apply the OTA, and re-root; OR to flash CWM or TWRP and then use the post #2 method.

Ah.... I didn't try unrooting first before the OTA - didn't think that would make much of a difference, since I was already missing the yahoo bloatware APK. After an unsuccessful stock recovery OTA, I then tried going the CWM recovery method and forcing the update as in post #2, and got caught in a recovery boot loop. Cleared the cache and Dalvik and tried again, no love. Did a factory reset (ugghh) and tried again, still no love. Finally flashed a full ROM image from rwilco12 via Odin, and I was back up and running!

Sadly, TitaniumBU had created its BU image on the internal card, so that was a loss, and by the time I realized that, I was already in recovery loop.
Question 1: Anyone know if it's possible to get data from the Internal SD without being able to boot into the OS? (Not going to help this time, but maybe next time, if worse comes to worse).

Good news: i had the foresight to create a Nandroid backup in CWM recovery before doing the wipe. Bad News: it ran out of space on my friggin 4GB external card.
Good news: Nandroid manager app was able to pull SOME data from it (SMS logs and contacts), so I'm actually fairly pleased. Nearly all of my other info is on GDrive or Dropbox anyway. Tough night, tho!

Hey, you learned a couple things. 1. You now know what to do in a similar situation. 2. Getting a bigger card would be in your best interest. Nandroids get big.

Hi all, I'm rooted but appear to have the stock recovery. When I go into recovery is says 'Android system Recovery'. I don't have option to backup, below is what my menu says:

reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache

I rooted to get the wireless tether, didn't remove any Sprint bloatware or do any custom roms.

With that said, I'm assuming I should use the instructions in Post 1. Can someone please confirm. Thanks in advance!

Yes, you need to use post 1.

Thank you!

Ran into an error when trying to run the zip but it was because I changed the FWupgrade.apk name when trying to stop the upgrade notifications, after renaming it back, the upgrade worked flawlessly.

Well, I just found that I lost my root access.

One last question (hopefully), since I lost my root, can I use the same method I used before (included the utube I used)

i have basebadn version MD4 and build number MB1, which one is the important number?

I didn't lose any data/apps when using instructions in post 1. The only thing I had to do was root my phone again.

Ok here is the downlow, if I understood it correctly, I'm rooted with stock rom (Sprint GS3) go with post 1, but I have CWM and so go with post 2. I with post 2, my phone went crazy by going through a looping on/off sequence. So I restored and went post 1 then I got the MD4 update good, but I root my phone, and went into the looping event again. What did I do wrong?

Without knowing how you were trying to root, or where in the process it started looping, I don't think there's much I can even guess at. If you have your phone back to working condition, and are unrooted, I would suggest following the steps in this post to re-root. This has worked flaswless for a great many people: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...e-updated-how-root-your-sprint-galaxy-s3.html
