Hi all,
I have a 6gb data plan, of which I don't think I have ever used more than 2gb in any given month. My primary data usage relates to watching YouTube clips and streaming the SiriusXM app. For months now I have been doing the same daily streaming routine with no issues, until last week.
Every night when I go to bed I catch up on some clips from my YouTube subscriptions. I might watch between 5-10 clips on average. Each time one clip ends, I have to go back to my subscription list and click on another. I will sometimes fall asleep in the middle of a clip which has never been an issue because the clip ends and my phone soon goes into lock screen for inactivity for the rest of the night.
This one particular night I was doing exactly the same thing, but I woke up and YouTube had gone through over 6 gb of data. I had a text message that came in from Bell around 5am warning me that I was at 90% of my data limit, but by the time I woke up it had surpassed my limit.
I haven't made any changes to any settings that I am aware of. Since this, I have learned about being able to set the upper limit on my data and will be restricting it going forward. I also immediately turned off data that morning which you will see in the screen grab until after I spoke with Bell.
I phoned Bell and of course they were not willing to do much for me. I was facing a $150 data charge, and I was at least able to have them sell me 4gb of data to be applied to this billing cycle for about $50, so now my limit for the month is bumped up to 10gb (this is why I have that set as the upper limit currently in the screen grabs).
Since Bell bumped me up to 10GB I turned the data back on because I now had about 1gb left to play with before my billing cycle. Yet somehow over the last 2 days, after only watching maybe a dozen or so YouTube clips (always on average between 2.5 mins and 8 mins tops), YouTube burned through another half gb.
The only possible thing I can think of for the overnight issue is if I somehow clicked on a YouTube playlist. I never searched any out, I never clicked anything that said "Play all", I was doing my standard scroll through, see a thumbnail I found interesting, click it, and repeat. I'm still not sure why a dozen or so YouTube clips over the last couple of days would have chewed through another half gb (you can see this spike in the screen grab as well).
What do you think? Did I just simply somehow click a playlist that kept on rolling non-stop, preventing my phone from entering lock screen, until the morning? Is YouTube burning more data than usual lately for anyone else? Anyone else ever experience anything like this or have any suggestions I could consider?
Thank you for your time, I know this was a bit of a lengthy one to explain.
Cheers.
*Edit - I just discovered the HD toggle option was on, so that probably explains the data usage for the last couple of days for such few clips. I don't remember ever changing this setting to on though, perhaps it came auto with an update, I have no idea. But this still doesn't answer my overnight 6gb issue.
