YouTube stuttering and lagging above 480p?

[Android Central Question]

Hello! I recently acquired a Samsung A02, and YouTube runs extremely laggy and choppy if i try to play video above 480p.
I've tried factory resetting the phone, clearing cache, trying YouTube with and without updates, and forcing HW Overlays in Developer Options, among other things.
Can this be fixed somehow, or is the phone just not capable of handling 720p and upwards?
I sincerely hope that that isn't the case, since before this phone i had a 2015 J7 and i never had any issues playing videos on YouTube.

hello i have a similar problem but i have noticed that when I change to a different account it has no problem playing more than 480p i wonder if it is a yt account issue then?

I have the same issue, although usually only happens about half way into the video. I'm using a OnePlus 7T Pro which I don't think qualifies as 'underpowered' and the issues only started in the last month or so.

Welcome to Android Central! I assume that, like the OP, this happens on both wi-fi and mobile data, correct? Are you using a VPN?
