Z4root not temp rooting? I'm a newb :-D

Hello there... ok complete newb here!! I ran z4root on my htc evo 4g it went through the whole process and back to my home screen. All i am trying to do is remove the factory installed apps that only take up space and annoy me. I opened my file explorer and tried to enable the root option and it says my phone is not rooted! I have been at this all day and z4root is the only program that i came across that would allow a temp root...i dont need root for anything else. i'm on android version 2.3.3

any help or suggestions would be awesome

It doesn't work on the new 2.3 OTA.

And i would perm root but I use ubuntu on my computer and all of the ways I have read the programs are not ubuntu friendly! I am very frustrated!

There is no way to root 2.3 so you are out of luck till they break the boot loader.
