Parse Error

Recently I have been downloading applications via apk files and it had been working and installing fine. Since yesterday though when I would go to install it, I would get a message saying parse error. I'm not sure what this means. It is not the file or where I am getting the file from because I have tried multiple files from different sources. This happens to every file I try to do that with. Can anyone explain what this error means and how can I get everything back to normal?
