Airport coverage tends to be pretty focused on the ariport and may just be two towers on different sides. If you are really close to the airport you can get coverage. But this is all conjecture until towers are online.

I think launch airports that are not in launch cities won't have 4G on the surrounding towers. They will most likely just broadcast the 4G signal via the in-building distributed antenna system (DAS).

Biggest worry for me will be the pricing. With Sprint, I'm 4G ready at $80 a month with everything unlimited to anyone on any network and Visual Voice Mail, Sprint Nav. and Sprint TV included. With the Droid 2 I got last week, I'm at $80 a month for 450 mins. and unlimited calling + text to Verizon members only with 500 additional texts, and Visual Voice Mail, Verizon Nav. and Vcast aren't included. If they go with tiered pricing for 4G and the unlimited option (if they don't kill it) is too much, I may stay with Sprint exclusively. Time will tell.

1 - Your phone would still work, you just wouldn't get LTE speeds. The devices will be backwards compatible for Verizon's 3G network coverage.

Ahh...the second notion was actually based on the first, that the D-Inc wouldn't work on 3G-networked cities. But I thought I heard that there would not be a 3G radio in this, unless I'm mistakenly tieing in the earlier rumors that the Desire HD was actually what the Inc HD will now be...

This just made my Storm escape decision to the D-Inc that much harder, though I'm thinking of grabbing it for free from Dell, and then selling it to someone off contract when the Inc HD comes out.

Hmm, I haven't heard any such rumors. I mean, I suppose it's possible but it wouldn't make much sense for Verizon to not include 3G radios in a device. The vast majority of their network is (and still will be for the near future) 3G CDMA based. Not including on board 3G CDMA compatibility would make the device useless outside LTE markets.

It's farther than wimax because LTE has a lower frequency than wimax.

There's no requirement that LTE be on a lower frequency, it just happens that in the US, the first couple of deployments of LTE are on the 700-800 mhz bands. Clear is testing LTE in FDD mode with paired 20 mhz of spectrum in 2.5 ghz.

A rule of thumb is that a radio signal attenuates in atmosphere at a rate that includes as a factor the square of the frequency, but in the clearwire case they could counter that effect by using a lower code rate, that is, make up for the loss attenuation of the higher frequency by a gain from error correction.

In the end, you might prefer to be on 20+20 @ 2500 mhz rather than 10+10 @ 780 mhz for similar reasons.

And, of course, when you're near the tower, you'll get higher performance than with the 10+10 setup.

LTE range depends on the spectrum the wireless carriers own.

It just so happens VZ in 2007-08 purchased licenses for the right to operate in the 700 mhz frequency band via the government's wireless spectrum action. This was spectrum previously occupied by analog television.

Just noticed that VZW added more cities to their "Coming Soon" section, including 3 cities in my state, including where I work, so I am happy. Hope they get the services up sooner rather than later.

I'll beleive it when I actually see it. I remember years ago being promised by verizon that 3G (EVDO) was coming to my area. It took 3 years for it to happen.
