Question on adding a line?

If you add a line to your *under contract account* which has one month to go and you add the new line as a BYOD, does the new line go month to month or start a new 2 year contract?

Month to month. My line is currently with my company but I'll be taking over ownership of it again. When I asked about adding it back to a family plan that has phones under contract still, they said it would be $20/month to add it since I no longer have a phone that needs to be paid off (2 years since last upgrade, have a Nexus 6P on it).

Is that $20 instead of $40 for the data plan? I would probably upgrade the account to the XL plan.
