Hangouts -- What's the deal with Hangouts?

I've been using Hangouts for text messages, since this is the default msg app for KitKat. (New Nexus 5 - great phone, by the way).

Hangouts is confusing in some areas, however. What are the implications if I am signed in or note signed in with my Google ID? There appear to be two "modes" - one with my Google ID and one labeled "SMS". Is it just me, or are others confused about this?

At one point there was a question about signing in to Google+, but I don't want to do that - don't want the baggage associated with the so-called "social networks." I haven't seen that notice or choice recently, however.

Should I look for other message apps? I would like a cross-platform app that syncs messages with an app that can run on my iPad and desktop computer (iMac). I am trying MightyText. It works, but it keeps nattering me, saying that I'm not signed in. Maybe this happens because my desktop computer goes to "sleep" - not sure about this.

Am I just making this harder than it has to be? Thanks.
