Question re background of notifications - please help

Can the background color be changed from white to black? I'm guessing not from what I've been trying to research, but I thought I would ask. I cannot stand the white box notifications from everything. I'm using a new to me Note 4 and still getting used to Lollipop and so far that's the only thing that is driving me nuts. I'm using Nova but still can't figure out how to change the notification backgrounds to black like on my s5 (which still had KitKat).

Changes to the notification bar are deeper in the OS, so unless you root the device and install a ROM that supports UI modifications, you're out of luck on the notification bar. You can customize it on the lockscreen if you use a 3rd party app, but that's about it.

You can also modify it with themes, BUT I don't know if the Note 4 supports 'native' themes like the Note 5 and S7/S7 Edge do. IF it does, then each theme also modifies the UI colors; you'd just have to find a theme that suits your needs.
