Samsung s3 update error

[AC Question]

I hope someone can help me. My daughter just had an update on her Samsung S3 when it was done it said that her data was Corrupted and she need to do th factory reset we just go back from vacation and all her pictures are on there and we did not back them up. is there a way to save er data or to fix the phone without the factory reset and why did an update do this????
