Why am I having trouble connect wifi to apps?

wifi connection to apps

my first smart phone. wifi connected -proved by receiving emails(i havnt sent any yet)
when i try to access e.g. google i get message that it cannot be connected.it gives various possible reasons such as website down,but these are not correct.W hat am I missing? assume that I know nothing and you will be not far off.

Welcome to Android Central! What do you mean by accessing Google? Google Play Store, Gmail, Google Calendar, etc.? Is it only one of those, or all of them? Does this happen on any wi-fi network? What about mobile data (3G/4G)?
