It's normal to have heavy data and battery use for a day or two after a major update. All Google apps and syncing are set to the default 'on' settings.
Try Accounts - Google - Account name and turn off sync settings you don't need temporarily, Master Sync needs to be on.

You don't say what device, but have a look at that forum on Android Central and see if others have recommendations.
