I think its wise for you to have it checked rather than risk it leaking into the motherboard. Some batteries are usually made of a metallic casing, so dents are never deep enough to reach inside. But I think you should take it to someone for them to check.

There's really no way "to check" without tearing the battery apart. Considering that the battery is in the $10-$15 range, be safe and replace it. (It's not so much leakage, although that's hazardous, but if the battery shorts and goes into thermal runaway, and the phone is in your pocket, it can amputate your leg before you know what happened. Lithium batteries explode under extreme conditions. It's not worth the risk.)
