Notification sounds are not working properly since the last update, what can I do?

If I am texting I get no notification sounds from anyone unless I am in the general messaging screen or a home screen. It is only happening since the update over the weekend. I tried making the system the default for notifications and not Zedge and it still does not work

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Was it the Lollipop update? Are you saying you're not getting notification tones if you're in other apps, or when the screen is asleep?
