You need a program on the computer you're connecting the phone to that can display that kind of file. Most computers can display most picture formats by default, so just double-clicking the picture (in the computer) should open the right program and display the picture.
As far as the computer seeing the card - unless you're running Windows 98 or earlier, you just plug the adapter into the computer and it looks like an additional hard drive. Double click it, find the folder, double click that, find the picture, double click that. The same as you would for a picture on your C drive. (Assuming the adapter can handle the card. I just found out that one of my old adapters not only can't read anything larger than 4GB, but locks the computer up if I put an 8GB card into it. [It just ignores anything larger.])
