    I received a text message from an unknown source. I do not want to open it for fear that it might cause a virus. how can I delete it without opening it?

    It depends on your phone and msg app. You can try this. Open your msg app and in the list of text messages press & hold on the one you want to delete. It should appear a little menu with a delete option or maybe there'll be a bin icon top right.

    I do not know what Make or Model Phone or what OS version you have I am going to assume you are using Hangouts. Open up Hangouts you should see a list of everyone that you reseived a text from lately. Find the one you are trying to delete and long press it without opening it, from the next screen that popup you can delete with the trash can icon in the upper right.
